Area 08 · Act 2 · The Goldfields Push

Southern Cross Junction

Southern Cross, WA — the last wheatbelt town before the goldfields proper; low granite outcrops, salt lakes, and the Eastern Goldfields Railway line running dead east toward Kalgoorlie.

DAY 41: THE EMUS DISCOVER THE RAILWAY TIMETABLE. THEY ARE MORE PUNCTUAL THAN THE ARMY.

The history behind it

Southern Cross was where the 1890s gold rush began and where wheatbelt telegraph lines converged; in-game, the army has commandeered the rail siding to ship 'anti-emu materiel' east — mostly wire, sandbags, and one confused artillery piece nobody signed for.

Outposts (4)

Take all of them and the area is yours. Retreat halfway through and the ones you already hold stay held.

  1. The Siding

Rail siding · Defence tier 2

Loading platform stacked with wire spools and ammunition crates, guarded by a Rifleman Line and a Lewis Gun Post on the water tower. Barbed Wire funnels the approach along the tracks.

  2. Frasers Salt Flat Picket

Gun post · Defence tier 1

A lone Lewis Gun Post dug into a granite outcrop overlooking a salt lake — wide open sightlines, but the gunner has to reload eventually and there is nowhere for HIM to hide either.

  3. Telegraph Repeater Hut

Supply depot · Defence tier 2

The wire link back to Perth. A Sandbag Officer and a Rifleman Line defend it; capturing it delays reinforcement restock flavor for the rest of the war ('COMMUNICATIONS WITH THE FRONT REMAIN... AVIAN').

  4. Hunt's Well Homestead

Telegraph station · Defence tier 3

Requisitioned farmhouse HQ with a Truck-Mounted Lewis parked in the yard. Peck the tyres, then drown the veranda in emus. Feed bins in the barn are a food bonus.
